Nuria Izquierdo-Useros

Principal Investigator

Nuria Izquierdo-Useros is a biologist from Madrid who obtained her PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 2009. Her research focuses on the interplay between antigen presenting cells and enveloped viruses, and includes studies of the molecular mechanisms for viral entry associated with an extracellular vesicle pathway that is exploited by viruses to evade the host immune system.

In 2011, she pursued post-doctoral studies —funded by the José Castillejo fellowship programme— with Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Kräusslich at Heidelberg University (Germany). There, she contributed to the identification of Siglec-1 as a novel dendritic cell receptor that mediates HIV-1 capture via recognition of specific gangliosides exposed on viral membranes.

This research line has opened different avenues to develop novel antivirals. Indeed, while exploring Siglec-1 interactions with other enveloped viruses, these studies led to the isolation of new mAbs that combat HIV-1 transfer, but also block Ebola viral entry into myeloid cells. In 2012, she returned to IrsiCaixa and was awarded with one out of the six Mathilde Krim Fellowships granted worldwide —funded by amfAR—. At IrsiCaixa she has been PI of several projects funded both by public and private sectors and co-directed two doctoral theses. Now she leads an independent group focused in emerging pathogens and microbial threats, which aims to design novel therapeutic tools to improve outbreak control and increase preparedness.
